I discovered an excellent low-traffic alternative to SFO from the city  
that uses CalTrain right-of-way OR private landfill area as a link --  
great potential for acquisition for bike trail!  Here are the  
directions from Third & Bayshore: 
 
Immediately south(west) of the 101 overcrossing,  
R on Tunnel Ave. south on Tunnel past the dump and just  to the east  
of the CalTrain tracks, until you get to the lagoon.  
L just  before the bridge (which takes you over the tracks and back to  
nasty  Bayshore) onto Sierra Pt. Parkway.  
Take the next R to continue on Sierra  Pt. Pkwy.  
Continue south beside the beautiful lagoon until the road curves  to  
the left to cross under 101. There, you may descend an embankment on   
your right and ride parallel to the CalTrain tracks until you come out  
at  Oyster Pt. Blvd., or continue a little  further and turn right on  
a trail that traverses landfill area, working  your way on the obvious  
trail southward to Oyster Pt. That gets you into  the industrial area  
north of the airport.
